About the Grant Program The Humanities in Place program, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation , is dedicated to deepening public understanding of complex, multi-layered histories. This initiative seeks to transform how public sites, cultural spaces, and historical landscapes reflect and honor diverse historical narratives. By supporting visionary, community-anchored projects, the program aims to ensure that regional heritage, public memorials, and civic archives actively contribute to a more inclusive public culture. Key Objectives & Focus Areas This grant initiative prioritizes project proposals that align with the following strategic pillars: Inclusive Historical Narratives: Elevating underrepresented histories and marginalized voices through rigorous humanities scholarship, public programs, and educational outreach. Public Memorials & Sacred Spaces: Creating, contextualizing, or reinterpreting public monuments, historic sites, and memorials to reflect complete and authentic histories. Regional Cultural Preservation: Preserving tangible and intangible cultural assets, community heritage sites, and local historical practices. Community-Led Archives & Collections: Supporting community archives, oral history documentation, and digital humanities efforts that democratize access to historical resources. Eligible Organizations This opportunity is open to initiative-driven organizations committed to public engagement and historical equity, including: Non-profit cultural and educational institutions ( $501(c)(3)$ equivalent) Museums, historic preservation sites, and historical societies Public and community archives, libraries, and research facilities Local grassroots non-profits and community-based cultural collectives Funding & Impact Grant Range: Up to $50,000 per funded initiative. Impact Scope: Direct support for project planning, community engagement frameworks, archival curation, public exhibitions, and site re-interpretations.
